.:Take a Walk on the Dark Side:.
Don't You Trust Me; a Draco Malfoy FanFiction.
Book 1: Don't You Trust Me?
Book 2: Take a Walk on the Dark Side
Book 2: Take a Walk on the Dark Side
I've been writing this FanFic since the summer of '09 and now we've reached Book 2! I thank all of my readers soo much for your support. (:
The link to Book 1 (closed thread, just giving the link if you'd wanted to read it) <*>Don't You Trust Me?<*>
And alas, we continue our journey with Melody, Draco, Astoria, and the rest of the DarkSiders, as well as some unfortunate Order members, Hogwarts staff, and Potter-followers. Book 2 takes place from the very end of Half-Blood Prince into Deathly Hallows, and I'll be largely making the entire story up with not alot of reference to the books because, as you all sadly know, there isn't a ton of Draco in DH. So this should be a fun little wild fantasy ride! Okay, I'll shut up now and begin with the story.

[Chapter 1 - Not That I Have a Choice]
- Spoiler:
Darkness was pressing in all around me. My lungs seemed to implode; I couldn’t breathe. My fingers were slipping out of Draco’s grasp ―
With a thud, we landed in a narrow, moonlit lane. I collapsed on the ground, my left hand ― my wand hand ― stinging for an unknown reason. When I glanced down at it, I nearly fainted; the skin on my palm had been ripped cleanly off. Draco gasped. “Splinched… oh, I’m sorry…”
“Not… your… fault…” I gasped, hyperventilating. Draco picked me up and started walking briskly up the lane. My vision was blurring, and I saw faintly the outline of a large manor I recognized ―
The next thing I knew, I was laying in a warm, comfortable bed. My eyelids fluttered open and I saw two similar faces peering down at me ― Draco and his mother. As soon as Narcissa saw that I was awake, she swept from the room, a flicker of fear marring her features. Draco barely noticed his mother leave. As I sat up, he hugged me tightly.
“You Splinched yourself, then fainted as I carried you to the house. You’ve been unconscious for nearly a day―” he said as he released me.
“Never mind me; I’m fine… what happened with Dumbledore?”
Draco’s face turned deathly pale. “Snape.” was all he managed to utter.
“Snape what?”
“Snape killed Dumbledore. I failed. I failed to do the deed the Dark Lord set me. Last night, while you were unconscious, He came. The Dark Lord. He tortured me and Mother…”
I flung my arms around Draco and held him tightly. “That’s horrible…”
“And it wasn’t even because I had failed. He said he hadn’t expected me to be able to do it anyway ― it was just punishment for my Father’s failure at the Ministry last summer.”
I stared at Draco in horror, at a loss for what to say.
“He threatened to kill us all ― you included ― if we failed him again.”
I tried to stop myself from crying, but to no avail. Tears splashed down my cheeks.
“I know,” mumbled Draco as I cried into his shoulder, “It’s all my fault, I got you into this, I―”
“Will you shut up about everything being your fault, Draco?!” I exclaimed angrily, sobbing even harder.
“I just feel so bad… I screwed up your life…”
“No, you didn’t, don’t even say that.” I sniffled and dried my tears. “My life would be terrible without you.” I kissed him.
The creak of the door opening made us jump. My arms still around Draco, I glanced over to see Bellatrix smirking at us.
“I would think that you two would be downstairs greeting the Dark Lord rather than hiding up here and snogging.”
“He’s here?!” Draco yelped.
“Yes, He is here,” Bellatrix practically beamed. “He knows I am His most faithful servant, and there is no place safer for Him than the house in which I reside.”
“Are you able to stand yet?” Draco asked me. I nodded and stood up. I was still wearing the clothes I had worn on the night of Dumbledore’s death; they were a little disheveled, and my shoes, I noticed upon pulling them on, were slightly bloodstained. My hair was reasonably good-looking for all that had happened. I put it up in a bun and was still trying to brush the dirt off my white shirt and my green Slytherin tie as Draco and I left the small guest bedroom.
I remembered the ornate halls and grand rooms of Malfoy Manor from my prior visit, but it felt different now; I couldn’t quite place what it was.
Hand in hand, Draco and I hesitated in front of the closed drawing room door and then his pale, trembling hand pushed it open.
All the usual furniture of the room had been pushed aside, and a long, polished table dominated the space. Lord Voldemort sat at the head of the table, partially obscured in shadows. Narcissa was standing near the doorway, her face impassive. Bellatrix was nowhere to be seen. Draco and I stepped inside the room and, without a word to either of us, Narcissa left, closing the door behind her.
“Draco. Melody. Come.” instructed the high, cold voice of the Dark Lord. Draco and I moved forward and stood behind the chairs at the end of the table opposite the side Voldemort was sitting.
“I have a task for you.” Voldemort said softly. Nagini, his great snake, slithered under the table, past our feet. When neither Draco nor I spoke, Voldemort continued, speaking now to me. “Melody… you are going to kill your parents; they know too much. They must be slaughtered. Draco will assist you in this task.”
The world was slipping out of focus. My heart was pounding in my ears. I faintly heard Draco’s quivering voice answer, “Y-yes, My Lord.”
Kill my own parents? I couldn’t do it. I wouldn’t do it…
Not that I had a choice.
As I stumbled back upstairs at Draco's side, aware that he was watching me with pity and concern, I realized what was different about Malfoy Manor.
It was becoming my first and only home.
[Chapter 2 - Warped by Fear]
- Spoiler:
- Trembling, I collapsed onto my bed. Lying on my side, tears poured out of my eyes as I stared blankly at the wall that was five inches from my face. I felt Draco lay down behind me and wrap his arms around my waist. He didn’t say anything, but it was enough that he was there.
After five minutes, I turned over in his arms. Our faces were about an inch apart. I tried to smile weakly, but I just burst into tears again.
“It’s not fair…” I whispered as I sobbed.
Draco stroked my hair. “I know,” he whispered back.
The door of the room creaked open again, and Draco turned his head sharply. Seeing that it wasn’t his mum, he stayed lying down with me.
“What, Aunt Bella?” he asked in an annoyed voice.
“I’ve come to speak to Melody…” she replied. I dried my tears and sat up.
“Yes?”
“You should be proud that the Dark Lord has given you this task, Melody. You should be grateful he spared your lives. You shouldn’t be moping about! From what I’ve heard you don’t even like your parents―”
“Of course I do!” I cried in a scandalized voice. “I mean, they’re annoying, but they’re my family and I love them and I can’t p-possibly k-kill them!” I started crying again and Draco pulled me into a hug, glaring at Bellatrix.
“You’re just making her more upset! Get out of here!” he growled at his aunt.
“You, Draco, are being an ungrateful―”
“I don’t care what I’m being!”
“The Dark Lord spared you even after you failed him! You should be proud he has given you another chance to prove yourself!”
There was a long pause. “What if I don’t want to?” Draco asked.
“WHAT?!” screeched Bella.
“Ugh! Just get out!” Draco pointed his wand at Bellatrix.
“Draco,” she began, trying to make her voice calm and levelheaded, “You really wouldn’t dare…your own aunt?”
“Just leave us alone and I won’t hex you.”
Bellatrix considered him for a moment, and then turned and swept from the room. Draco waited for her footsteps to die away before setting his wand down on the night stand.
“I’m really sorry about her―”
“Don’t be,” I said quietly.
He seemed to know that I didn’t want to talk about Bellatrix or the task he and I had been presented with, and after a minute he said, “So… you never got around to telling me what happened with Astoria.”
“Oh… well…” I began the story, starting with the night she told me she still loved Draco, and then skipping to the night of Dumbledore’s death. I tried to recount the conversations I had held with her as accurately as I could. “… and when I looked up all I saw was her hair whipping out of sight, back into the battle.” I paused. “I don’t know where she went, who she talked to or what she did.”
“That’s so… weird. It’s not like her at all to hurt her best friend… she must’ve really been scared.”
“Yeah, well, when I tried to point that out she tortured me, remember?”
“That clarifies it, though… she was scared, and you both knew it, though she didn’t want to admit it even to herself…” he was quiet for a moment. “Fear… can do things to people… it can totally warp them into a person they never would be in their right mind… I would know. At times, last year, when I thought my plan would fail, I resorted to stupid things… like trying to make Katie Bell give the necklace to Dumbledore and giving Slughorn poisoned mead that he would hardly give to Dumbledore as a gift. And then, well, you remember that day that Potter cursed me with that Sectumsempra thing…”
I nodded, frowning. “Astoria’s just scared. Of what, I’m not sure. Maybe she’s scared of herself.”
[Chapter 3 - Another Kind of Magic]
- Spoiler:
- It was strange, not being in school on the last day of term. It was also aggravating that Draco, having already had his seventeenth birthday, was able to do magic while I was not. Therefore, on July first, the eve of my seventeenth birthday, I had a very hard time falling asleep.
I awoke, seemingly seconds after I had drifted off to sleep, to find Draco’s face centimeters from my own. “Happy Birthday!” he smiled, and kissed me. I sat up, grinning, and grabbed my wand off the bedside table.
“Finally free of the Trace!” I beamed. I pointed my wand at the outfit I had set out for the day, which was lying on my trunk, and exclaimed, “Accio outfit!” The black shirt shot at me like a bullet and hit me in the face, followed a moment later by black skinny jeans. Once the rest of my clothing and jewelry had attacked me, I set the outfit down in a heap at the bottom of my bed and turned back to Draco, whose eyebrows were raised.
“Oh, shut up.” I laughed, whacking him playfully on the head with my pillow. He threw it back at me, chuckling.
“Since we’ve been holed up in the manor all this time, I didn’t get the chance to get you a present,” Draco said apologetically. “So I thought we could just get out of here for a day.”
“Sounds excellent.” I grinned. “It’ll be great to just forget about it all for a day.”
“Exactly how I feel. I’ll see you in ten by the broom shed?” Draco asked, getting up.
“Sounds like a plan,” I smiled. Once he left the room and shut the door behind him, I jumped up to get ready for what would surely be the best day I had had for weeks.
Eleven minutes later, I pocketed my wand and hurried out into the hallway. I encountered no noise or person until I had reached the back hallway near the kitchen, where the new house-elf was whistling to himself while he cooked. I snuck past the kitchen and finally pushed open the back door. I ran down the stone steps and followed the walkway around the manor, past the garden. Draco was leaning against the broom shed, his broom propped up beside him.
“You’re late, Carnka,” he called jokingly to me as I approached. I stuck my tongue out at him.
“Well soooory,” I said sarcastically, throwing up my hands in mock-exasperation. He grinned and kissed me.
“So where are we going?” I inquired. There was no way we could just fly our broom around near Malfoy Manor.
“Well, I thought… back near Hogwarts. You know. Where we met last year. For the memories.”
I nodded, trying to ignore the fact that the chosen destination was painstakingly close to where my parents lived, and grasped Draco’s hand. We turned on the spot into compressing darkness.
A minute later we arrived on a scenic hill, overlooking the tiny village of Hogsmeade and the grand Hogwarts castle. Everything was exactly as I remembered it - but what did I expect? Hogwarts to have disappeared with Dumbledore?
“So,” said Draco, setting down his broom on the grassy hillside, “what do you want to do?”
“I dunno, what do you want to do?”
“It’s your birthday, you decide.”
I glanced around. “Let’s just… hang out. Talk, fly around a bit…”
“Sounds good,” said Draco, plopping down on the hillside. He pulled me down onto his lap and smiled. “Remember that night when Potter, Weaselbee and the Mudblood attacked us out here? And Snape gave them a month of detention…” he grinned at the memory.
We reminisced, talked, flirted, and flew for several hours. Before we knew it, sunset had come and gone, and the sky was pitch-black. Gleaming stars dotted the inky atmosphere.
I was lying on my back on the hill, staring up at the sky. “Star light, star bright…” I whispered. Draco joined in. “First star I see tonight… I wish I may, I wish I might, have this wish I wish tonight.”
I wasn’t entirely sure what to wish for at first, but then I remembered my parents. I wished that they wouldn’t have to die.
“What did you wish for?” Draco asked.
“I can’t tell you or it won’t come true.” I murmured, even though it was all just a silly children’s game. Wishing on stars didn’t really ever work. Muggles always said that wishes created miracles, which were magic. But the only type of magic that was real was the kind all witches and wizards already possessed.
Draco seemed to be reading my mind. “You know, I always used to think wishing on a star would really make my dreams come true. Then I grew up, and I realized that you can’t sit around waiting for something to happen, for your goals to be achieved; you’ve got to build your own fantasy. Life isn’t going to happen for you. You’ve got to stumble blindly through the darkness ahead, brave the terrors… and there’ll be light at the end of the tunnel, and finally, you’ll be truly happy.”
“That was incredibly poetic,” I complimented.
Draco snorted. “Bosh. Me? Poetic? No.”
“You don’t realize it, but you are. You’re really deep, too.”
“No, I’m not.”
“Yes, you are!” I insisted. “You’re incredible, Draco, but your greatest fault is that you doubt yourself.”
“Hm. Well, not everyone can be perfect like you.”
“I’m not perfect! Far from it!”
“Maybe not, but you’re perfect to me.”
As I leaned over and kissed him, I realized that there was indeed another type of magic in the world, one that some people weren’t so lucky to have. It was a type of magic that could heal you or hurt you, make you believe and make you care. It could cause the sun to shine on the dreariest of days, and make you feel flawless. It was love, and I was fortunate enough to have it.
[Chapter 4 - Looming Ahead]
- Spoiler:
- With a crack, Draco and I appeared in the garden beside Malfoy Manor. He locked his broom in the shed and the two of us started walking, hand in hand, towards the back door.
We were ten feet away from the manor when the door flung open and light spilled out into the night. Narcissa was standing in the doorway, looking stressed and bursting with emotion.
“Where on Earth have you two been?” she screeched.
“Erm… out.” Draco replied, looking somewhat apprehensive of his mother’s response.
“Well obviously!” she burst out. “Gone -- no note -- no sign of where you had gone -- and you weren’t even here for your father coming home--!”
“Father’s home?” interrupted Draco. “But how--?”
“There’s been a mass breakout from Azkaban,” Narcissa said calmly.
“Excellent -- where is he?”
“Speaking with the Dark Lord in the Drawing Room. When he finishes I’ll tell him you’re finally back--”
She shot both of us a nasty look and strode back into the house. Draco and I followed.
“Ah, Master and friend!” squeaked the house-elf as we passed the kitchen. “Mistress made sure I saved diner for you!” he held up a tray that contained two bowls of stew.
“Not now,” said Draco, continuing down the hallway.
“Thanks anyway!” I called over my shoulder to the elf as I followed.
We climbed a flight of stairs and emerged in a more spacious, lavish hallway. The rug beneath our feet muffled our footsteps as we tiptoed towards the Drawing Room and pressed our ears against the door.
“What do you think you’re doing?!” hissed Narcissa, appearing from around the corner. We jumped away from the door and, catching the enraged look on her face, hurried upstairs without protest.
Taking refuge in Draco’s room, we sank down onto his bed.
“So,” said Draco, “apart from that bit, how did you like your seventeenth birthday?”
“I loved it.” I smiled.
“Good. So did I.” he kissed me. I wrapped my arms around him and kissed him back.
A few minutes later, footsteps in the hallway grew louder. “I think they’re in there,” called Narcissa. Neither Draco nor I paid any attention as the door was pushed open and Lucius Malfoy stepped into the room.
“Ahem.” Lucius cleared his throat very loudly. Reluctantly, Draco and I surfaced from our kissing-fest and turned to look at him.
A year in Azkaban had sucked the glamorous and powerful aura out of Lucius. His hair was stringy and graying. His hollow cheekbones made him look somewhat skeletal. He clutched his silver snake-headed walking stick tightly, relying on it for actual support for the first time. His gray eyes, so like Draco’s, looked empty and dead.
“Hello, Draco,” said Lucius, his voice rough and weary. “And who is this?” his eyes fell on me. I was sitting on Draco’s lap with my arms around his neck.
“Melody,” I answered, “Melody Carnka.”
“Melody Carnka?” Lucius said curiously. “I wasn’t aware that you were, ah, one of us.”
“She just became a Death Eater this year,” Draco explained.
“I see.”
Draco nodded. There was an awkward silence. In an instant, Lucius’s expression turned from faintly amused to grave.
“Draco, in light of your failure to carry out the Dark Lord’s plans--”
“Hark who’s talking!” Draco burst out without waiting for his father to finish, “Shall we remind ourselves why you got shut up in Azkaban in the first place?!”
The two made movements to draw their wands, but I was quicker. I cast a shield charm between Draco and his father, more the protection of Draco and I than for Lucius.
“Please don’t.” I said quietly.
With a sigh, Lucius slid his wand back into his walking stick and Draco laid his on the bedside table. Only once Lucius had hobbled out of the room and his footsteps had died away did I let down the shield charm and stow my wand in my pocket.
“Honestly, Draco, you shouldn’t go picking fights.” I said quietly.
“I was defending myself!” Draco cried in outrage.
“Shh, I know.” I ran my hand through his hair and kissed him softly.
There was a knock on the door. Draco rolled his eyes as he called, “Yeah?”
“The Dark Lord has summoned both of you to come see him.” said Narcissa without bothering to open the door.
Draco and I exchanged worried glances. This could only be about one thing: our new mission.
Two minutes later, we stood in the shadowy Drawing Room. Voldemort was in his usual spot at the far end of the long, polished table.
“Tomorrow, Melody, you will go to your parents’ house, accompanied by Draco. You will murder them. If you do not, I will know, and I will kill you and them personally.”
[Chapter 5 - Haven't Got the Guts]
- Spoiler:
- July third was a gloomy, overcast day that fit the mood precisely. I had stayed locked up in my room until after dinner, refusing anyone but Draco entrance. At seven, there was a knock on my door.
“Yes?” I said, lying on my bed and staring blankly at the ceiling.
“It’s me,” Draco said. Without waiting for me to get up and unlock the door he said, “Alohamora” and the door swung open.
“Melody, you cant’ stay in here all day.” he said, crossing the room and sitting down beside me. There was a long moment of silence, and then he said, “We… we have to go now.”
I had been bracing myself for this all day, but still, hot tears filled my eyes as he said it. I blinked them away and sat up. “Okay.”
Five minutes later we stared up at the manor I had lived in all my life until this summer. Walking around the perimeter, I found it was exactly as I remembered it, except for one thing.
A marble headstone stood beside the garden. There were slightly wilted flowers at the foot of it. Fearing what I might read upon it, I edged closed and bent down.
It was my Father’s grave.
“Oh, my God,” I whispered, my hand flying up to my slightly open mouth. According to the headstone, he had died just a week ago. I wondered how it had happened.
Trying with all my strength not to feel, I stood up and started walking towards the house. Taking my lead, Draco followed me in silence.
The back door opened when I pushed on it; it wasn’t even locked. I found this very strange. I walked cautiously down the hallway and up the stairs, Draco following behind. A clinking noise came from the sitting room. I poked my head inside.
My mother was sitting in the chair facing the window. From what I could see of her, her hair was oddly wispy and she was wearing all black. She was a goblet of wine in her hand, and Twinkly was bowing to her and walking away holding the bottle in which it had come from. When the tiny house-elf caught sight of me and Draco, she exclaimed in surprise and dropped the wine bottle. It smashed on the rug.
“Twinkly…” groaned Mum, turning around in her chair, but she too dropped her goblet in shock at the sight of her daughter who she hadn’t seen since Christmas standing in the doorway.
“Melody!” she exclaimed, getting up and rushing over to me. “What made you decide to come back?”
“I… I didn’t… I’ve got a… a job to do…” I stammered, tears welling up in my eyes once again.
“What happened, sweetie? Did he do something to you?” she glared at Draco.
“No, Mum, no… he’s been amazing…” I pulled myself out of my mother’s crushing hug and raised my wand. My hand was shaking uncontrollably.
“Melody, what’s going on?” Mum exclaimed, backing away a few steps.
“I’m r-really s-sorry…” I sobbed. “I h-have t-t-to k-kill…”
“Melody! What’s gotten into you?” Mum shrieked.
“I’m a Death Eater.” I said, trying to steady my voice again. I pulled up my left sleeve to reveal the Dark Mark and Mum practically fainted. She was clutching the chair she had recently vacated and breathing heavily.
“I’ve been g-given a m-mission…” I whispered. I couldn’t make myself say the two fateful words that would bring about my mother’s death. “I’m s-sorry, Mum… I love you… but I h-have t-to d-do this…”
“You haven’t got the guts.” said a horribly familiar voice from the doorway. I whipped around. Bellatrix was standing there, a sneer on her face.
“Aunt Bella! What the hell?! What are you doing here?” Draco demanded, shocked.
“I knew neither of you would be able to do it.” hissed Bella. She drew her own wand and pushed me aside. “Avada Kedavra!” she shrieked. There was a flash of green light and my mother fell to the floor, limp and lifeless. Bella next turned her wand on the frightened house-elf and slaughtered her as well, for no other reason than that she was there.
The world was spinning. My heart ached. Faintly, I heard Bella say, “Now, Draco, Melody, we go back and inform the Dark Lord that the deed has been done.”
Of my list of people I couldn’t face at the moment, Lord Voldemort was first. Without thinking about it, I turned and raced down the hallway and up the stairs, away from Bellatrix, away from my mother’s dead body. I bolted into my room and locked the door, then sank down against it, sobbing.
When I finally opened my eyes and glanced around, I found that my room was in perfect order. There was not a speck of dust in sight, and everything was neat and tidy. It seemed Mum had taken the trouble to keep my room prepared for me, even when she probably knew I would never stay here again.
I stumbled over to my bed, my vision partially obscured by tears, and climbed under the covers. I curled myself into a ball and covered myself with the sheets. I sobbed for what felt like forever. Every time I started to dry my tears, the image of my mother’s dead body came back to me and I broke into sobs once again.
A whisper of “Alohamora” in a familiar voice filled my ears. I stayed curled up under the sheets with my eyes closed as footsteps drew nearer to the bed. Draco lifted up the covers and saw me laying there. He laid down next to me. “Poor baby…” he whispered, stroking my hair.
I don’t know when I finally fell asleep, but I know that Draco stayed by my side.
[Chapter 6 - Everything I Ever Need]
- Spoiler:
- Bright beams of sunlight hit me fully in the face and my eyes flew open. The curtains had not been drawn; they were pulled back, allowing the sun to shine on the room in the early hours of the morning. I was lying on my side, staring out the window. For a moment my mind was at peace, thinking it was an ordinary day, and I would go downstairs and have Twinkly make me breakfast before setting off for lessons with my tutors. But when I rolled over and saw Draco’s piercing gray eyes staring into mine, reality hit me with the force of a bullet.
I could tell Draco was expecting me to start crying again, but I said quietly, “I can’t believe all of that really happened.”
“I know,” Draco replied sadly. It was silent for a minute.
“You stayed with me,” I said.
“I didn’t want you to be alone.”
We returned to Malfoy Manor in the late afternoon. As on my birthday, Narcissa freaked out on us.
“Where have you two been?!” she shrieked as we tried to quickly sneak upstairs unseen. “Last night Draco returned without Melody and then vanished again after the Dark Lord had spoken to him. Neither of you returned home last night, and then you just waltz in here this afternoon and expect me to be perfectly alright with all this!”
“For your information, Mother, we didn’t ‘waltz’ in, and we don’t expect anything -- although we have every right to. We’re both seventeen; we’re adults now. We have every privilege to just leave.” Draco pointed out. Narcissa looked flustered.
“Well then. Well. I suppose.” she spluttered. “But where were you last night?!” she demanded.
“Erm, well, after we, er, completed the mission, Melody sort of… ran upstairs to her old room, and after I spoke to the Dark Lord I came back and stayed there with her.” said Draco.
“Well where did you sleep, then?”
“Erm… with her in her bed.”
It sounded bad the way he said it, like something had happened, and Narcissa evidently took it that way. Before she could say another word, Draco and I pushed past her and ran up to Draco’s room. She didn’t follow us, but glared angrily at our retreating backs.
Draco and I sat down on his bed. After a few moment of silence, Draco said, “So how are you dealing with what happened?” In the time we had been at my parent’s house, we hadn’t breathed a word about the mission.
“I don’t know,” I said quietly. “I think… after a while… I’ll be okay…” I sighed. “Right now it just hurts too much.”
Draco nodded, gently kissing the top of my head as I leaned into him.
“I think I should try to get it out of my head… I need a distraction. Something to cheer me up.”
“I can certainly help you there,” Draco grinned. He pulled me in and kissed me. Let me tell you, snogging Draco was very distracting. And it definitely cheered me up.
Some time later, I faintly heard Narcissa’s voice out in the hallway. “They’re in Draco’s room… make sure they’re under control, please.” said Narcissa, sounding extremely suspicious. A moment later the doorknob turned and someone stepped into the room. Reluctantly, Draco and I pulled our lips apart and turned our heads towards the door. To my supreme shock, there stood Astoria, looking fatigued and paler than I had ever seen her.
Draco, Astoria and I just stared at each other for a minute. Then Draco asked bluntly, “Why are you here?”
“The Dark Lord is using your manor as a base, Draco, as you very well know.” Astoria glared at him.
“But he’s been here for a while… why didn’t you come sooner? I hear that you’ve now got an obsession with the Dark Lord to rival my aunt’s.” Draco sneered.
There was a long silence. At last, Astoria said, “I was in Azkaban.”
“What?!” Draco and I exclaimed simultaneously.
“The night Dumbledore died, I fought against the Order of the Phoenix and the Hogwarts staff. I was rounded up with another Death Eater and sent to Azkaban.” said Astoria. Now that I noticed it, her cheeks were a little sunken and her long hair hung lank around her head. Her crystal-blue eyes no longer sparkled; it was as if all life had gone and left them empty and dead.
“So why have you come up here to talk to us? The last time I saw you…” I trailed off, not wanting to bring back those bad memories lest history repeat itself.
“I wanted to ask for your forgiveness.” Astoria mumbled.
Draco and I gaped at her. Astoria went on to apologize.
“Melody, I’m really sorry for the things I said to you and for cursing you. I was just… I was consumed by fear.”
Draco threw me a significant I-told-you-so look, even though I hadn’t disagreed with him when he suggested that reason in the first place.
“And Draco…” Astoria continued, “Well… I’m just sorry for everything. I’m sorry for being bitchy and annoying and I’m sorry for trying to screw up you and Melody’s relationship.”
Silence.
“And I’m sorry for bailing on both of you.” she added when we didn’t say anything.
I glanced at Draco, searched his eyes for what to do, and then turned back to Astoria.
“Well, that’s good enough for me.” I said, shrugging. I got up off of Draco’s lap and ran to hug her.
“We missed you!” I exclaimed.
“Even Draco?” asked Astoria, staring at him over my shoulder. I released her and turned to face him as well.
“Yeah,” said Draco finally, “It was weird not having a smart-aleck trailing along, bossing us around and telling me to stop snogging Melody all the time.” he laughed. I joined in and even Astoria let out a reluctant giggle.
Having Astoria back filled a huge gap in my life. If only my parents were still alive, then I would have nearly everything I needed.
[Chapter 7 - The Dark Lord Ascending]
- Spoiler:
- The Drawing Room was filled with silent people, sitting at the long, ornate table. An unconscious woman hung upside-down over the table, revolving slowly as if suspended by an invisible rope. None of the people sitting beneath this singular sight were looking at it, all except for Draco, who seemed unable to prevent himself from glancing upward every minute or so. Every time he did this, I gently squeezed his hand to get him to direct his attention to the head of the table, where Voldemort sat partially concealed in the shadows.
The door of the room slid open and two men lingered for a moment on the threshold.
“Yaxley. Snape,” came the Dark Lord’s high, clear voice from the head of the table. “You are very nearly late.”
The two men strode into the room and hesitated as they reached the table. “Severus, here,” said Voldemort, indicating the seat on his immediate right. “Yaxley -- beside Dolohov.”
The two men took their allotted places. It was to Snape that Voldemort spoke first.
“So?”
“My Lord, the Order of the Phoenix intends to move Harry Potter from his current place of safety on Saturday next, at nightfall.”
The interest around the table sharpened palpably: some stiffened, others fidgeted, all gazing at Snape and Voldemort.
“Saturday… at nightfall,” repeated Voldemort, his lipless mouth curving into something like a smile, “Good. Very good. And this information comes--”
“-- from the source we discussed.” said Snape.
At this point I tuned out, having little interest on the attack and capture of Harry Potter. My attention was only stirred again when I heard Draco’s father’s name.
“No volunteers?” said Voldemort. “Let’s see… Lucius, I see no reason for you to have a wand anymore.”
Lucius Malfoy looked up. His skin appeared yellowish and waxy in the firelight, and his eyes were sunken and shadowed. When he spoke, his voice was hoarse; Azkaban had damaged Lucius forever.
“My Lord?”
“Your wand, Lucius. I require your wand.”
“I…”
Lucius glanced sideways at Narcissa. She was staring straight ahead, paler than usual, her long blonde hair hanging down her back. Under the table, her slim fingers closed briefly around Lucius’s wrist. At her touch, Lucius put his hand into his robes, withdrew a wand, and passed it along to Voldemort, who held it up in front of his red eyes, examining it closely.
“What is it?”
“Elm, my Lord.” whispered Lucius.
“And the core?”
“Dragon -- dragon heartstring.”
“Good.” Voldemort drew his own wand and compared the lengths. Lucius made in involuntary movement -- for a fraction of a second, it seemed he expected to receive Voldemort’s wand in exchange for his own. The gesture was not missed by Voldemort, whose eyes widened maliciously.
“Give you my wand, Lucius? My wand?”
Some of the throng sniggered.
“I have given you your liberty, Lucius, is that not enough for you? But I have noticed that you and your family seem less than happy of late… what is it about my presence in your home that displeases you, Lucius?”
“Nothing -- nothing, my Lord!”
“Such lies, Lucius…”
The soft voice seemed to hiss on even after the cruel mouth has stopped moving. Nagini, the huge snake, emerged to climb slowly up Voldemort’s chair. It rose, seemingly endlessly, and came to rest across Voldemort’s shoulders. Voldemort stroked the creature absently with long thin fingers, still looking at Lucius.
“Why do the Malfoys look so unhappy with their lot? Is my return, my rise to power, not the very thing they professed to desire for so many years?”
“Of course, my Lord,” said Lucius, his hand shaking as it rested on his lap. “We did desire it -- we do.”
To Lucius’s left, Narcissa made an odd, stiff nod, her eyes averted from Voldemort and the snake. To his right, Draco glanced quickly at Voldemort and away again, terrified to make eye contact. I could feel his trembling hand in mine under the table and longed to comfort him.
“My Lord,” said Bellatrix halfway down the table, her voice constricted with emotion, “it is an honor to have you here, in our family’s house. There can be no higher pleasure.” Bella leaned toward Voldemort, for mere words could not demonstrate her longing for closeness.
“No higher pleasure,” repeated Voldemort, his head tilted a little to one side as he considered Bella. “That means a great deal, Bellatrix, from you.”
Her face flooded with color; her eyes welled with tears of delight.
“My Lord knows I speak nothing but the truth!”
“No higher pleasure… even compared with the happy event that, I hear, has taken place in your family this week?”
She stared at him, her lips parted, evidently confused.
“I don’t know what you mean, my Lord.”
“I’m talking about your niece, Bellatrix. And yours, Lucius and Narcissa. She has just married the werewolf, Remus Lupin. You must be so proud.”
There was an eruption of jeering laughter from around the table.
“She is no niece of ours, my Lord,” cried Bella over the outpouring of mirth. “We -- Narcissa and I -- have never set eyes on our sister since she married the Mudblood. This brat has nothing to do with either of us, nor any beast she marries.”
“What say you, Draco?” asked Voldemort, and though his voice was quiet, it carried clearly through the catcalls and jeers. “Will you babysit the cubs?”
The hilarity mounted; Draco glanced in terror at his parents. I squeezed his hand under the table, trying to tell him without words to ignore the taunts. On my other side, Astoria had her eyebrows raised, trying her hardest, for the sake of she and Draco’s friendship, not to laugh.
“Enough,” said Voldemort, stroking the angry snake, “Enough.”
And the laughter died at once.
I looked at Draco, searching his beautiful gray eyes, as the conversation continued. Though his face was as expressionless as his parents’, his eyes showed that he was unnerved. I bit my lip so as to resist the temptation to speak to him and turned back to face the Dark Lord as the suspended figure revolving over the table came to life with a groan and began to struggle against invisible bonds.
“Do you recognize our guest, Severus?” asked Voldemort.
Snape raised his eyes to the upside-down face. All of the Death Eaters were looking up at the captive now, as though they had been given permission to show curiosity. As she revolved to face the firelight, the woman said in a cracked and terrified voice, “Severus! Help me!”
“Ah, yes,” said Snape as the prisoner turned slowly away again.
“And you, Draco?” asked Voldemort, stroking the snake’s snout with his wand-free hand. Draco shook his head jerkily. Now that the woman had woken, he seemed unable to look at her anymore.
“But you would not have taken her classes,” said Voldemort. “For those of you who do not know, we are joined here tonight by Charity Burbage who, until recently, taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.”
There were small noises of comprehension around the table.
“Yes… Professor Burbage taught the children of witches and wizards all about Muggles… how they are not so different from us…”
Charity Burbage revolved to face Snape again.
“Severus… please… please…”
“Silence,” said Voldemort, and Charity fell silent as if gagged. “Not content with corrupting and polluting the minds of Wizarding children, last week Professor Burbage wrote an impassioned defense of Mudbloods in the Daily Prophet. Wizards, she says, must accept these thieves of their knowledge and magic. The dwindling of the purebloods is, says Professor Burbage, a most desirable circumstance… she would have us all mate with Muggles… or, no doubt, werewolves…”
Nobody laughed this time: there was no mistaking the anger and contempt in Voldemort’s voice.
“Avada Kedavra.”
The flash of green light illuminated every corner of the room. Charity fell, with a resounding crash, onto the table below, which trembled and creaked. Several of the Death Eaters leapt back in their chairs. Draco fell out of his onto the floor, and since our hands were intertwined, I was unintentionally dragged down as well. Taking advantage of this moment of seclusion from the rest of the Death Eaters, I flung my arms around Draco and hugged him.
“Are you okay?” I whispered almost inaudibly in his ear.
“Yeah,” he whispered back.
We broke apart and stood up, but so did the other Death Eaters as Voldemort hissed, “Dinner, Nagini.” The great snake swayed and slithered from Voldemort’s shoulders onto the polished wood.
[Chapter 8 - Even Death Eaters Need Love]
- Spoiler:
- The rest of the summer passed quickly. With Astoria around, Draco and I didn’t have much time alone, but we managed to snatch moments in the late evening or when Astoria was speaking to the Dark Lord. On the bright side, though, there was a lot more to do and a lot more laughter now that we three best friends had been reunited.
We heard the tale of the 7-Potter-Chase, as it came to be called, from the variety of Death Eaters that passed through the house daily to convey messages or speak to the Dark Lord. These people also brought news of the Ministry’s quiet takeover and the new teachers at Hogwarts -- Snape, as headmaster, and the Carrows filling in for Muggle Studies and Defense Against the Dark Arts -- except now it was just the Dark Arts. Before we knew it, September 1st had come again, and we were standing in front of the scarlet steam engine that was puffing smoke into the already misty air.
The fact that Draco, Astoria and I, as well as other Death Eater’s children, most of whom were Death Eaters themselves, were able to board the train and complete the journey without disruption from Potter, Granger and Weasley confirmed that the “Golden Trio” was indeed not attending Hogwarts this school year. With the Death Eaters in power and those nuisances gone, it would surely make for a much more peaceful year.
That was until I realized that by now, everyone knew we had taken part in the murder of Albus Dumbledore, and that we were Death Eaters. That meant that every Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, and Hufflepuff opposed us with even greater ferocity than in the past. Almost every one of them, that is.
“Melody!” called a voice from halfway down the hallway, the second week of term. I stopped and turned around expectantly. Russell Onimous, the gorgeous Gryffindor that had adored me since early last year, was jogging over to me, after the pretty Ravenclaw girl he’d been snogging had gone to her class.
“Hey,” he said.
“Erm, hello.” I replied, a bit thrown off by his air of honest friendliness towards me.
“Where’d you go at the end of last year? I missed you,” he added with a grin, attempting to hug me. I pushed him away with an apologetic smile.
“I’m dating Draco Malfoy, sorry Russell.”
“Oh, still?” he said, looking crestfallen. “What do you even see in that guy?”
“What do I see in Draco? Hm, let me think.” I sarcastically pretended to consider the question for a moment. “Oh, yeah. He’s sweet and funny and nice and romantic and strong and gorgeous and thoughtful and talented and just all around an incredible person.”
“That’s almost as great as me, though!” Russell laughed. “Well, anyway,” he pressed on, looking sorry he’d commented that way upon seeing my glare, “if you ever change your mind… I’m available.” he flashed me a cocky grin and waved goodbye, strutting back down the hallway.
I rolled my eyes and stalked off towards the Slytherin Common Room. As I glanced back over my shoulder, I saw Russell with his arm around a different pretty girl as if he hadn’t just been snogging the Ravenclaw or offering his heart to me. I frowned. Last year, Russell had been a humble, intelligent, likeable person. It seemed that over the summer he had changed into a conceited jerk and a player.
“Parseltongue,” I said to the blank stretch of wall the concealed the Slytherin Common Room. It vanished at the mention of the password as I stepped inside.
“Pansy, get the hell away from me or I’ll hex you.” Draco’s threat floated across the Common Room. I turned towards the noise to see Pansy Parkinson about half a foot away from Draco, kept at bay only because of the wand in Draco’s hand that was pressed against her forehead directly in between her eyes. Astoria was watching, faintly amused. Pansy did not back away, but knocked Draco’s wand out of the way and attempted to kiss him again. I pulled out my wand, aimed it across the room and said, “Stupefy.”
Pansy collapsed onto the rug in front of the fire, unconscious. I stowed my wand in my pocket and hurried over to the scene, smirking back at the rest of the grinning Slytherins as I passed.
“Well, that was dramatic,” I said coolly, standing beside Draco’s armchair in front of the ornate marble fireplace and staring down at the crumpled mass that was Pansy.
“I’ll get rid of her,” Astoria smirked, pointing her wand at Pansy. “Wingardium Leviosa.” she said, and Pansy levitated into the air. Astoria marched up to our dormitory with the unconscious, floating Pansy in tow.
I sat down on Draco’s lap. “I’m having similar problems with Russell,” I rolled my eyes.
“Oh, really?”
“Yeah. Just now, actually, on my way down here, he tried to corner me, but I got away.”
“Did you hex him?” Draco asked, sounding hopeful.
“No, but I should’ve… he’s a conceited jerk.”
Draco nodded. “Yeah, he is. And Pansy’s just… eugh. Practically every time she sees me she tries to snog me.” Draco shuddered.
“I guess I’ll just have to snog you more so she doesn’t get a chance,” I grinned, kissing him.
A minute later Astoria reappeared, and made a loud retching noise when she got close enough for us to hear. Draco and I broke apart.
“Can you guys try to hold it in while I’m around?” she requested with a scowl.
“You weren’t here a second ago,” I pointed out. Astoria rolled her eyes and sat down in the second winged armchair by the fire. I swiveled around on Draco’s lap so I was facing her. “Astoria, even though you’re insisting you don’t care anymore, you obviously do. We need to find you someone else to get your mind off of him.” I picked up Draco’s hand and waved it at her.
Astoria snorted. “Honestly, Mel, I’m fine.”
“No, you’re not, and you know it. This could be a lot easier if you’d cooperate.”
Astoria sighed and dropped her guard. “Well what if I don’t want to find someone else! I mean, look at him!” she pointed at Draco.
“I’m still here,” he pointed out unnecessarily.
“Yes, he is amazing, but Tori, as you very well know, he’s taken by me,” I continued, ignoring Draco’s interruption. “So you need to find someone else. Broaden your mind,” I snickered, having reminded myself strongly of Professor Trelawney, and couldn’t help adding, “Use your inner eye to find another great boy out there.”
“Oh, honestly, Mel,” Astoria laughed, “I don’t think we’d even be able to find someone as perfect as Draco.”
Draco was looking quite uncomfortable listening in on this conversation.
“But Tori, it’s not about who’s perfect, it’s about who’s perfect for you. So go get to know someone!” I glanced around the Common Room. “Erm, how about Zabini?” I pointed to him as he walked down the stairs from the boys’ dormitories.
Astoria made a retching noise similar to the one she had made a minute previously.
“Hey, Zabini!” I called across the room, ignoring Astoria’s frantic protests. He looked in our direction. I beckoned him over.
“Yeah?” he asked, appearing between the two winged armchairs.
“Hi.” I said.
“If that’s all you wanted to say--”
“No. Astoria, erm, wants to talk to you.” I grabbed his arm and pushed him over to Astoria’s armchair. She gave me a death glare and then turned to face him, looking highly uncomfortable. I turned back to Draco, whose eyebrows were raised.
“I know, that was horrible.” I said in an undertone, glancing over at Astoria. She was looking awkwardly around the room and Zabini was staring at me with a questioning look on his face.
“Oh, forget it, you can go,” I said to him.
Once he was out of earshot, Astoria hissed, “Ugh! Melody! Why?”
“Sorry, sorry, that was a pretty bad attempt.”
“No kidding.” she scowled.
“Well, we’ll find someone, Tori, trust me. You really need to. And don’t spring that ‘Death Eaters don’t need love’ thing on me again. It’s really obvious you do.”
[Chapter 9 - How Would That Make You Feel?]
- Spoiler:
- That night, I sat in the dormitory with Astoria and the still-unconscious Pansy, I wondered aloud.
“Hey, Astoria, I know the boys can’t get into the girls’ dormitories, but could the girls get into the boys’ dorm--”
“Yes.” said Astoria with certainty, looking up from the magazine she was reading while lying on her stomach on her bed. She was wearing a white cami and gray flannel shorts.
“Okay, cool. You don’t happen to know which--”
“Draco’s in room seven.” Astoria said at once, seemingly reading my mind. I stared at her for a minute, a little taken aback at how quickly she retrieved these facts.
“Er, alright, thanks.” I said, still slightly disconcerted. I glanced at myself in the mirror for a moment. I was wearing pajamas; plaid flannel pants with black and various shades of gray, and a black cami. My chestnut hair was up in a ponytail, and two curly tresses were framing my face.
“Hey, Mel?” said Astoria.
“Yeah?” I turned around.
“You’ve been wearing a lot of black lately… are you, ya know, okay?”
I raised my eyebrows at her. “No,” I said sarcastically. “No, I’m not okay… I only have the most amazing boyfriend in the world, a fabulous best friend, good grades, basically no rules, and talent; my life is completely horrible.” I rolled my eyes.
“Well, I was just checking!” Astoria said defensively. I laughed.
“Alright. I’ll see you in a little bit.” I said, pulling on a pair of black flip-flops.
“Going to see Draco?” she asked without taking her eyes off the magazine.
“Er, yeah.” I said, my hand on the doorknob.
“Have fun…” she idly turned a page of the magazine.
“Okay… I will…” I said. Astoria seemed to be in a very strange mood. I left the room quickly and traipsed down the stairs into the near-deserted Common Room. I glanced at the spiral staircase that was the twin of the one I had just come down and then hurried up it. Room 7 was the top room. The door was slightly ajar, and I could hear voices issuing from it. I pushed it open and stepped inside.
Crabbe and Goyle were huddled together on one side of the room, whispering, both still wearing their Hogwarts robes. As my eyes fell on Draco, I felt like melting; he was shirtless. I had nearly forgotten how sexy he was.
“Hey,” Draco grinned at me as I walked over to him.
“Hey,” I smiled, kissing him.
“What brings you over here?”
“I dunno,” I shrugged. “Just wanted to say hi, I guess.”
“Cool,” said Draco, pulling me onto his lap as he sat down on his bed. I smiled and kissed his cheek. I glanced to my right and found Zabini watching us.
“Um. Hi.” I said to him. He rolled his eyes and turned back to the essay he was writing, sprawled on his bed.
“Did Astoria tell you which room we were in?” Draco asked.
“Yeah. I hadn’t even finished asking and she blurted it out.” I laughed.
“Yeah, well, she used to come up here a lot,” Draco said. There was a slightly awkward pause. “Er, is Pansy still unconscious?”
“Yeah,” I smirked.
We sat there in silence, thinking of nothing else to talk about. If we hadn’t been in a room with three other boys, we would be snogging right about now.
“You look really gorgeous, Melody.” Draco said quietly. “As always,” he added with a grin.
“Oh, thank you! And you,” I grinned, “look really sexy.”
“Yeah, well, I try.” Draco laughed, kissing me.
A few minutes later, we broke apart. Zabini was staring at us again, but I paid him no mind. I snuggled up against Draco. The clock over the door struck one o’clock in the morning.
“I should probably go,” I said with a sigh. I kissed Draco again. “Love you, baby.”
“Love you too, babe.” he said. I slid off his lap and waved goodbye as I walked towards the door.
As I strode out into the hallway, Zabini exclaimed, “Damn, Draco. Your girlfriend is hot.”
I smirked.
When I got back to my dormitory, Astoria was sitting cross-legged on her bed, her mirror suspended in midair before her as she pointed her wand at her curly blonde hair, which straightened at once. She looked up at me as I closed the door and walked across the room, sinking down on my bed.
“Was he shirtless?” she asked promptly.
“Er… yeah.” I said, completely taken aback. Astoria smiled reminiscently.
“He’s really sexy.”
“Yeah…”
Apparently she wasn’t finding this conversation nearly as awkward as I was.
“Astoria, we seriously need to find you a boyfriend.” I sighed.
“No, you don’t.” she said, finishing straightening her hair and admiring the effect in the mirror.
I got up and sat down on her bed in front of her, pushing her mirror down so that I could look straight into her face.
“Astoria. I think you need to accept the fact that he’s mine,” I said calmly. “You really shouldn’t be fantasizing about him anymore. Draco and I are just… inseparable. Deeply in love, as you can see. I don’t foresee us breaking up any time soon. Sorry. But you really need to find someone else.”
Astoria gave me a blank, unreadable look.
“Alright. Fine.” she sighed.
“Good.” I said, returning to my bed.
“But Melody, just a warning--”
“Oh God, not this again…” I groaned.
“No, seriously! Listen. I thought Draco and I were always going to be together, too. But then you came along.” I could tell she was trying not to sound bitter. “And you’re great, Mel, you’re my best friend. But a year from now, some other girl could be in your place, telling you to get over him because he’s hers.” Astoria paused, and then said, “Think about how that would make you feel.”
[Chapter 10 - The Girl Behind The Smile]
- Spoiler:
- The next morning was a Saturday. I got out of bed at ten AM. Astoria’s bed was vacant; she had evidently already left. I got up, dressed in a pair of jeans and a green tank top, shoved on worn black high-tops, threw my hair up in a ponytail, and headed downstairs.
Neither Astoria nor Draco was in the Common Room. Thinking Astoria was probably at breakfast and Draco was either eating as well or still sleeping, I exited the Common Room and headed down to the Great Hall.
On my way down an empty corridor, I had the misfortune to pass Russell, who was passionately kissing a Slytherin girl with long, white-blonde hair. At the end of the hallway, I stopped short and whipped around.
No. Way.
But astonishingly enough, yes way.
Astoria and Russell broke apart and spotted me at the same time. Astoria rushed over to me, grinning broadly. I gaped at her.
“Tori, are you for real?” I hissed.
“Um. Yes.” she giggled.
“He’s a total player!” I whispered.
“You told me to find someone nearly as amazing as Draco. I did. Can you please just be happy for me?” Astoria pleaded.
I sighed. “I’m just trying to make sure you don’t get hurt. Promise me you won’t fall too hard for him?”
“No promises there, buddy.” Astoria grinned. Russell approached her from behind and hugged her in a surprise-attack. She squealed a bit, giggled, and kissed him.
“Okay… I’ll be going, now…” I said awkwardly, hurriedly vacating the scene.
A minute later, I slammed myself down on the bench beside Draco, who was shoving scrambled eggs into his mouth in a quite undignified manner. I snorted at him for a moment, and then resumed my state of solemn worrying.
“Wasa ma’er?” Draco asked through a mouthful of egg.
“I just came across Astoria snogging Russell, that’s what the matter is!”
“No!” Draco exclaimed in disbelief.
“Yes!” I contradicted.
“She’s gonna die when she finds him with someone else.”
“Exactly!” I cried, thankful that Draco, at least, could grasp the horrors of this situation.
We sat in silence for a moment, and then Draco resumed devouring his breakfast.
“This is no time for eating!” I exclaimed. He paused, and the sad expression he made at his forkful of egg caused me to burst out laughing. “Oh, alright,” I giggled.
As Draco recommenced eating, I glanced up at the ceiling of the Great Hall, which was enchanted to look like the sky. It was a bright, sunny Saturday.
“So what are we going to do today?” I asked.
“Whatever you want,” Draco shrugged.
“Oh, shut up, you know I’m horrible at planning.”
“So we just go along with our whim, then? My favorite kind of plan.” Draco grinned.
I smiled and rolled my eyes. While I was doing so, I noticed Astoria and Russell enter the Great Hall. Astoria was giggling madly and Russell was looking faintly embarrassed.
“She’s done by this afternoon, if she keeps giggling…” Draco said quietly.
“I hate to admit it, but that’s probably true.” I murmured.
Astoria waved, grinning, across the Hall at us. I waved unenthusiastically back, and Draco pretended not to see her.
“She’s acting like an idiot…” he hissed through his teeth.
“I know…” I whispered back. “Was she, erm, like this when you guys dated?”
“Erm… sometimes…” Draco said, staring intently at everything but Astoria. “But mostly she was just herself…”
“Look at her.” I hissed. Draco chanced a glance over to the other side of the Hall to see Astoria staring stupidly at Russell, who was now looking extremely uncomfortable with being with her.
“She’s finally lost it.” Draco said seriously. “I can’t bear to watch her make a fool of herself… or cry when he dumps her… let’s go.” Draco grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the Great Hall. As we passed by where Astoria was sitting, I witnessed Russell getting up and going to sit in between two other girls. Now it was me dragging Draco through the Entrance Hall and out onto the grounds.
“Mistake, mistake, it’s freezing out here!” I cried. There I was in a tank top, and it was below freezing. I hurriedly dashed back inside and Draco followed, laughing.
When we crossed back through the Great Hall, me still shivering, Astoria was nowhere to be seen. The same was true for Russell.
“Oookayy…” I said, looking around. “Wonder where they are…”
“She’ll turn up eventually,” Draco shrugged. I raised my eyebrows at him. “Well, she will!” he insisted. “How much longer is she going to last, anyway?”
“Fair enough. Let’s go.” I grabbed his hand and started walking back to the Common Room.
To our surprise, Astoria was in the Common Room, sitting in one of the winged armchairs by the fire and smiling serenely.
“Hi,” I said uncertainly as we approached. Draco sank down into the other armchair and pulled me down onto his lap. I smiled and kissed him, and then turned back to Astoria.
“Hi,” Astoria smiled.
“Are you and Russell… okay?” I asked tentatively.
“Yeah,” Astoria smiled happily.
“Okay, then…” I glanced skeptically at Draco.
“You sure?” Draco asked.
“Yes.” Astoria said confidently.
“Okay…” I said slowly. Draco shrugged.
Randomly, Astoria got up and started walking out of the Common Room. “Bye!” she called behind her.
Very weird.
Very, very weird.
Later that night, Astoria dreamily waltzed into the dormitory.
“Hi.” I said uncertainly.
“Hello, Melody…” Astoria replied, smiling vaguely.
“Honestly, this is even worse than you being all awkward about Draco.” I blurted out. Astoria’s face fell.
“What?”
“You’re all… weird. You’re really vague, and giggly, and just… very, not you.”
Astoria bit her lip. “I know. I’m doing that so he’ll like me.”
“Astoria! That’s so stupid!” I exclaimed. “If you be yourself, if you let him see the real you, he’ll fall for you. I swear. You need to let him see who you really are!” I stared hopelessly at her, wondering if any of this was sinking in.
“But all he sees in me now is my eyes and my hair and my smile.” Astoria said dejectedly.
“So let him get to know the girl behind the smile.”

Ooh... I am beyond intrigued by your newest edition of Don't You Trust Me?. O.o I must read more, or I shall... I dunno. But great job! Excellent ending, riveting beginning. Can't wait for more, and I loved this line:
“I would think that you two would be downstairs greeting the Dark Lord rather than hiding up here and snogging.”
Made me laugh.

[Chapter 11 - Why Are We Still Here?]
- Spoiler:
- It was nearly midnight on a Sunday night, and Draco and I had just started our homework. We were sitting in our usual chairs by the fire. I was zoning out over an Ancient Runes paper, and Draco was struggling with an essay for Transfiguration.
“Does this even make sense?” Draco asked, sliding the essay, which wasn’t even a quarter of the way completed, across the table to me. Within three seconds of reading it I handed it back to him.
“Not at all.”
“Ugh! Screw this.” he groaned. “It’s all so stupid, anyway… it doesn’t matter to the Dark Lord how many N.E.W.T.s we get. What we can do and the kind of service he’s received will be the only important things…”
“I know, it’s so stupid. I mean, why even try anymore, you know?”
“Why even be here anymore is what I’m thinking.” Draco muttered. Out of nowhere, he turned around and smiled at me. “Exactly. Why are we even still here?”
I smiled, too, although I wasn’t really sure why. “What are you talking about?”
“If there’s no point in being here… why don’t we just leave? We’re of age, we have the right.”
“True,” I smiled.
“So let’s go!”
“What? Now?”
“Why not?”
I stared at him. “But what about Astoria?”
“What about her?”
“What’ll she do without us?”
“She’ll live. We can write her. She can come, if she wants, but she’ll probably be pretty lonely. The awkward third wheel, you know.”
“Okay… but where are we going? And how are we going to get out of here? Do you have any plan in mind?”
“We just make it up as we go along.” Draco grinned.
I smirked. “My favorite kind of plan.”
“Where do you two think you’re going?” Snape stepped out of the shadows as Draco and I made to exit through the one-eyed-witch passageway.
“Away from here?” Draco guessed, grinning.
“No, you’re not. You’re staying right here. Draco―”
“What’re you going to do? Tell my mum? I’m of age, I’m seventeen. Melody and I have the right―”
“The law states that all witches and wizards in Britain ages eleven to seventeen must be at Hogwarts.”
“That’s just so the Dark Lord can keep every kid under his control. We’re Death Eaters. You don’t honestly think the Dark Lord cares how many N.E.W.T.s we get, do you?”
“No, Draco, but you are not under any circumstance going to leave this castle, and neither is Miss Carnka.”
“Watch us.” Draco smiled.
Snape pulled out his wand, but I was too quick. I Stunned him in an instant and he fell to the floor, unconscious.
“Obliviate,” I whispered, pointing at Snape’s head. “Precautionary measures,” I said to Draco.
An hour later, we were sitting in the silent cellar of Honeydukes in Hogsmeade. “Brilliant plan.” I hissed.
“Shut up. You know we can’t go out on the street because of the Caterwauling Charm.”
“So we’re just going to lurk here in the basement until morning?”
“Yes.” Draco said defiantly.
“I think not. Can’t we just Apparate directly out of the shop?” I asked irritably, standing up.
Draco thought about it for a moment. “I don’t see why not…” he said, standing as well.
“Any idea for a destination, yet?” I whispered. So far, this “brilliant” let’s-escape-Hogwarts plan was not working out so well.
“Erm… we can’t go to your old house, unless you’re able to face it now… we could go to my house… but my mum would kill us… er…” Draco trailed off, trying to think.
“Let’s go to my house, for now.”
“Are you sure you’ll be okay?” Draco asked, concerned.
“Yeah,” I nodded, taking a deep breath. It was going to be hard, but where else could we go, really?
“Ready?” Draco asked. I nodded. He grabbed my hand and we turned on the spot into the crushing darkness.
We landed in the front of the manor. One of the front double doors was hanging open. I felt a pang in my heart, but I took a deep breath and walked inside.
Draco followed me in the door, and I closed and locked it. I sped right past the sitting room, not wanting to face the place where my mother had been murdered. My trunk made loud clunking noises behind me as I dragged it up the stairs.
Although some of the rooms we passed were torn apart, as if someone had raided the house, my room was perfectly in order, with the exception of more dust. I got rid of it with my wand, and then checked the time on the clock on the wall. It was one o’clock in the morning.
“It’s late…” I yawned. “I’m gonna go to bed.” I dug through my trunk until I found some sweatpants and a tank top. “Shoo, shoo,” I grinned to Draco, waving him out of the room so I could get changed. He chuckled and grabbed a pair of pajama bottoms out of his trunk, and then walked out into the guest room across the hall.
I got changed and opened the door. Draco was standing there, leaning against the door frame, shirtless again. I grinned and kissed him.
“Can you stay with me tonight? I’ll be lonely…”
“Of course,” Draco smiled. He picked me up and spun me around. I laughed and kissed him again.
“I love you,” I whispered.
“I love you, too,” he whispered back. He kissed my forehead and gently set me down on my bed. I climbed under the covers and so did he.
“I wonder if Astoria’s realized we’re gone yet. She’ll probably be wondering why I’m not in the dormitory by now…” I said thoughtfully.
“She’s probably thinking you’re sleeping with me.” Draco snorted.
“But I am sleeping with you.” I smiled.
“That you are,” Draco smiled. He pulled me closer to him. I snuggled up against him and closed my eyes, eventually drifting off to sleep.
[Chapter 12 - I Know.]
- Spoiler:
- I woke up gradually that morning. For a moment I wondered why my head was slowly rising up and down, but then I realized that I was lying on Draco’s chest. I could feel his heart beating steadily under my hand. He was still asleep.
I tilted my head a bit to bring the clock into view. It was nearly eleven AM. It took a moment for it to dawn on me that today was a Monday, and I wouldn’t be going to school. Nor would I be going to school tomorrow, or the next day, or the whole week. No, Draco and I were done with that pointless education.
I felt Draco stir and turned to look at him.
“Good morning, gorgeous,” he smiled. I kissed him.
“Good morning, handsome,” I grinned. “It’s nearly eleven on a Monday morning… weird, isn’t it?”
“Yeah…” Draco agreed. “And by this time no doubt, they’ve told my mother I’m missing…” he sighed.
“Yeah, you should probably write her and tell her we’re okay.” I said, sitting up. “I’m gonna write to Astoria.” I got up and walked over to my desk, grabbing a quill and a piece of paper from the drawer. I sat down and started to write,
Astoria ―
You’re probably wondering where the hell Draco and I are. And if you’re not, then, shame on you. Anyway, Draco and I decided that staying in school is pretty much pointless now, and we kind of escaped last night. I had to hex Snape to get away, but I bet he’s okay.
So keep me posted on what’s going on at Hogwarts, and how things are with Russell, because Draco and I probably aren’t coming back.
I miss you already! Love,
Melody
I glanced over to the corner of the room where Mischief’s cage usually stood, but then I remembered she was still at Hogwarts. “Didn’t think about that…” I said, glancing out the window.
“What?” Draco asked, picking up the quill and taking another scrap of paper to write a note to his mum.
“Mischief. She’s still at Hogwarts.”
“She’ll turn up within the day. Owls are smart like that.” Draco shrugged. I nodded and set the letter back down on my desk. I stared at Draco as he scrawled the note to his mum. God, he’s so hot. His hair had gotten longer since last year, and it now hung in front of his eyes, making him ten times more attractive than he already was. That, along with him being shirtless, made me melt inside.
Draco set down the quill and looked over at me. “What?” he grinned.
“Just thinking how incredibly lucky I am to have someone as amazing as you.” I smiled.
“You’re way more amazing than me,” he smiled, pulling me in and kissing me.
“No, you are,” I giggled, kissing him again.
“No, you!” he insisted, kissing me.
“This is so silly…” I laughed.
“I know,” Draco smiled. He kissed my forehead and then picked me up and spun me around. I nuzzled my face into his neck and kissed it. We stood there for a moment, in silence. I felt his hair tickling my face as it brushed against it and smiled.
A loud rap on the window and a hoot from outside drew our attention. Draco kissed the top of my head and then set me back down on the floor. I walked over to the window and opened it. Mischief flew in, flapping her wings noisily, and a warm breeze followed her. Most of the snow had melted outside, and buds were staring to form on the trees. Spring was on its way.
“I know you just got back, but I need you to deliver this letter to Astoria.” I said to my owl. Mischief pecked at my finger angrily. I gave her a reproving look and began to tie the letter to her leg.
As I was fastening the letter to Mischief, I heard another rush of wings. I looked up to see a great tawny owl flying towards the window. I recognized it as Draco’s mum’s owl. As it flew through the window and landed on my desk, I noticed it had a red envelope tied to its leg. Draco cursed under his breath.
“A Howler…” he groaned. Bracing himself, he pulled the envelope from the owl and opened it.
“DRACO MALFOY!” the letter screeched in the voice of a hysterical Narcissa Malfoy. “HOW DARE YOU RUN AWAY LIKE THAT!? WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? THEY ALSO SAID MELODY WAS MISSING, AND IF I FIND OUT THE TWO OF YOU HAVE RUN OFF TOGETHER, I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT I’LL DO! YOU HAD BETTER RETURN TO HOGWARTS AT ONCE, OR I WILL COME AND FIND YOU AND BRING YOU BACK MYSELF!”
There was a very long silence after the letter incinerated.
“God, she’s such an overprotective freak…” Draco groaned.
From deep within me, emotion that I didn’t know I was hiding bubbled up.
“She cares, Draco…” I whispered. “She cares about you and you should be grateful she’s here for you, and she wants to know where you are and make sure you’re safe.” I felt several tears slip down my cheeks. “I just wonder… if my mum… was still around…” I bit my lip and stared at the ground, silently sobbing and shaking. “She never wrote even once to see where I was, after we left Hogwarts last year. She never even tried… I just wonder… if she would care enough… to write me… and make sure I’m safe… now…”
I felt Draco’s strong arms enfold me and I leaned into his chest, silent tears slipping from my eyes onto his skin. He slowly stroked my hair, rocking side to side.
“I’m sorry I’m such an emotional wreck…” I whispered.
“Baby, that’s what I’m here for… just let it all out.” he said quietly, slowly sinking down onto the couch. I cuddled up next to him.
“I don’t really… want to talk about it…” I sniffled, wiping the tears from beneath my eyes.
“That’s fine too. Whatever makes you feel better.”
“I just wish I could forget… everything that’s happened… it seems like everything bad happened to me within a year.”
“I know, it’s not fair to you…”
I gave him a weak smile and sighed, leaning my head on his chest. He reached out and held my hand, our fingers intertwining.
“You know I’ll always be here for you, whatever happens.” he said softly. I turned my head and stared deep into his eyes. A small smile lit up my face.
“I know.”
[Chapter 13 - Russell’s Secret] (PG13 content!)
- Spoiler:
- “Hey, Mel, Mischief is back!” Draco notified me. I opened my eyes. Indeed, a large black owl was flying through the brilliant blue sky towards where Draco and I were lying on the grass, watching the clouds roll past. Within a minute Mischief had landed beside me on the grass, a letter clutched in her beak.
“Thanks, Mischief! The window is open; you can just fly in…” I said. Mischief took flight again, flying straight in the open window. I opened the letter, which was from Astoria, and read aloud:
“I miss you, Mel! I took your advice about Russell, and it’s working! He seems a lot more into me, now. Instead of just snogging, we actually like talk occasionally. He asked where you went and I told him, I hope that’s okay. But anyway, keep me posted about what’s going on with you and Draco! I miss you both! Love, Tori.”
“I still don’t trust Russell.” Draco shook his head disapprovingly.
“Who knows, maybe he’s being himself again.” I shrugged.
“Either way.” Draco smirked. I rolled my eyes, smiling.
“Just let Tori be happy, okay?” I asked. Draco nodded reluctantly.
“Okay, well, I’m going to go back inside and write back.” I said, sitting up. “Coming?”
“Yup.” Draco replied. He got up and held out his hand to help me up as well. I smiled and took it. We walked back to the house and went up to my room. Sitting down at my desk, I picked up a quill and poised it above a new sheet of paper, ready to write. After a minute of blankly staring at the parchment, I set down the quill.
“Well, that went nowhere. I can’t focus, for some reason.” I rolled my eyes.
“Well, you don’t have to focus, you can just make out with me…” Draco grinned.
Nearly a week later, it was starting to get a little boring. There wasn’t much to do. Without anything new happening, Draco and I would run out of things to talk about pretty easily. But on Saturday, things began to become a little more exciting.
It was nearly midnight, and Draco and I were sitting in front of the fireplace, enjoying a nice romantic evening of peaceful silence and a lot of kissing. A loud crack out on the balcony interrupted us. Startled, I stood up, quietly walking over to the nightstand and getting our wands. I tossed Draco’s to him and together we approached the door.
“Please stay here…” Draco pleaded, pushing me back as he put his hand on the doorknob. “I don’t want you to get hurt…”
I nodded. Draco slowly turned the knob and peered outside. A moment later he exclaimed, “Tori!”
I ran out to stand next to him. Indeed, Astoria was standing on the balcony with her trunk, beaming. But she wasn’t alone. Russell was there as well, also accompanied by his trunk and looking sort of awkward.
“Why didn’t you tell us you were coming?” I asked, running out to hug Astoria.
“We just sort of decided to come tonight.” Astoria grinned. “Is it okay with you guys?”
“Yeah, totally!” I smiled. Draco looked a little less cheerful, probably because he was still suspicious of Russell.
“Thanks, guys. This is going to be so much fun!” Astoria smiled.
“You can stay in the guest room, it’s across the hall,” I pointed across the room to my door, which was closed. Astoria nodded and headed for the hallway. Draco trailed after her.
“Tori, I need to talk to you…” he said, throwing a wary glance at Russell.
“Oh, Draco, please don’t make her upset…” I pleaded.
“I just want to warn her…”
“Like she was trying to warn me about you? Draco, don’t…”
“Well, this is different! You know we both have legit reason to believe Russell is up to something.”
I sighed. “Okay. Go.” Draco followed Astoria into the guest room. Awkwardly, I turned around to face Russell, who was standing in the middle of my room with his trunk, staring at me. I suddenly felt very conscious that I was wearing a low-cut tank top and short-shorts. I slowly walked over to my wardrobe and put an oversized black sweatshirt on.
“You can, er, go into the other room with Tori…” I said, pointing.
Russell didn’t move.
“Russell, what do you want? What are you up to? Why are you doing this?” I hissed. I knew there was no way Russell would voluntarily leave his assortment of attractive girls at Hogwarts to come with Astoria.
Before Russell could answer, Astoria marched into the room, looking angry. “C’mon, Russ…” she said, grabbing his hand and pulling him into the other room. Draco sheepishly reentered my bedroom.
“You made her mad.” I observed.
“Yeah,” he frowned. “Hey, why’d you change?”
“Russell was staring at my boobs.” I said flatly.
“That perv.” Draco scowled. I chose not to point out that Draco had been staring at them tonight, too.
“So why do you think Russell came with Tori?”
“I dunno… either he’s up to something, or Tori’s given him a love potion.”
“Oh, I hope not…” I said worriedly.
“She wouldn’t tell me anything. She yelled at me a little, and told me Russell was really into her now, and that I should just let her be happy.”
I shook my head sadly and sighed.
“So anyway…” Draco wrapped his arms around my waist as he sat back down on the rug in front of the fire, pulling me down on his lap. I smiled and kissed his cheek.
A moment later, the door opened and Astoria and Russell came in. They sat down beside us on the rug.
“Well this is cozy.” Astoria grinned. “Hey, Mel, why’d you change?”
“Er…” I exchanged a glance with Draco. “I was… cold…”
“Oh. I’ll go make hot chocolate, then!” she said excitedly, standing up.
“Er… okay… do you want help?” Draco asked.
“No, but I don’t know where the kitchen is.”
Draco sighed and got up. “Follow me.” He led the way out of the room and downstairs, once again leaving me alone with Russell.
“I’m just going to go… make sure they don’t need more help…” I said, making to stand up. Russell grabbed my arm.
“No, they’re fine. You just don’t want to be alone with me.” he said. He sounded sort of gloomy.
“Er… alright, no, I don’t.” I confessed, pulling my wrist out of his grasp, but not getting up. “But really… why are you here?”
“What do you mean?” Russell asked.
“Why did you come with Tori? You’re a player, and you just love taking advantage of all those girls who adore you. I didn’t think you were prepared to be the sweet, humble boy you used to be.”
Russell sighed. “I acted really stupid this year. I knew that a lot of people liked me and I guess it just went to my head. But since last year I’ve truthfully just liked one girl… and I’m trying to change back to who I really am, for her.” His voice was completely sincere and he sounded apologetic.
“Oh, and that girl is Astoria?” I asked, believing all of his speech but that last bit.
“No. It’s you.”
I stared at him, astonished. “No.” I said disbelievingly.
“Yes.” Russell insisted, coming a little closer.
“You’ve done all this just to get to me? When you know I’m taken?” I asked, standing up and backing up a few steps.
“Yes… I was kind of hoping you’d be over him by now…” Russell said, getting up as well and following me.
“I’m not, obviously…” I said, continuing to retreat. I felt my back hit the wall and started to panic as Russell closed in on me.
“But he’s not here now.”
“But he’ll be back any second, please don’t come any closer.” I pleaded. He was already much too close.
“Come on, Melody, we would be perfect together…” Russell grinned. He tried to pull my sweatshirt off of me but I held it down.
“Don’t!” I said warningly.
He rolled his eyes, pulled out his wand, and said in a bored voice, “Accio Melody’s sweatshirt.” My sweatshirt flew off of me and landed on the floor by Russell’s feet. I hurriedly tried to pull my cami up.
“Russell, get away from me!” I said, panicking, trying to shove him away, but he was barely inches from me now.
“But you know it’d be much easier to just give in to it…” he whispered. He pressed his body against mine. I couldn’t move; I couldn’t escape.
“Stop!” I shrieked as Russell tried to put his hands up my shirt. “DRACO!! DRACO!!”
A moment later there was a loud crack, and I heard Draco shout, “WHAT THE F***?!” He ran over and pulled Russell off of me. Shaking, I slumped down against the wall, eyes closed. I heard Draco cursing at Russell, and then I heard a grunt of pain from the latter. When I opened my eyes, Russell was lying on the floor, and Draco was standing over him, his hands curled into fists. A moment later Astoria burst into the room and screamed.
“WHAT DID YOU DO TO HIM?” she roared at Draco.
“He just practically tried to rape Melody!” Draco yelled back.
There was a very stunned silence. Astoria was at a complete loss for words. Draco glared at the writhing Russell, kicked him, and then rushed over to me.
“Are you okay?” he whispered. I nodded, tears trickling from my eyes.
The main emotion in the room was complete and utter shock.
[Chapter 14―Another Perfect Moment Shattered] (PG13 content)
- Spoiler:
- Needless to say, Russell went back to Hogwarts that night, having sustained several injuries from Draco and a screaming fit from Astoria. Astoria stayed another day, in shock and needing moral support. I was still completely distressed. Draco had to look after the both of us.
On Monday, Astoria left, apologizing once again about bringing Russell, and telling us we’d better write because she was going to miss us like hell. After that, life returned to normal. In the dramatic events of that Saturday night, Draco and I had completely forgotten about Draco’s mum trying to track us down. Which is exactly why, when she finally found us a week later, we were not at all prepared.
It was very late Friday night, possibly even early Saturday morning. Draco and I were in bed, completely oblivious to the world around us. Neither of us registered the footsteps in the hall, or the door opening. It was the bloodcurdling scream of Narcissa Malfoy that brought us back to awareness.
Okay, so she did walk in on us at a really bad time. I was lying in bed, wearing a push-up bra and short-shorts, and Draco was lying on top of me, wearing just his boxers and kissing my neck. HOWEVER. That does not necessarily mean something was going to happen. NO. Shut up.
“OH SHIT.” Draco said loudly, catching sight of his mum, who was freaking out and seemed to be at a loss for words horrible enough to describe her anger. Draco quickly removed himself from on top of me.
“Er… hi, Mum.” he said, waving and trying to pretend this was not a major situation.
“DRACO MALFOY! YOU ARE IN AN UNBELIEVABLE AMOUNT OF TROUBLE! I DON’T EVEN KNOW ANY WORDS TO EXPRESS HOW ANGRY I AM WITH YOU RIGHT NOW! AND THEN I WALK IN ON YOU LIKE THIS!”
“But it’s not what you think…” Draco lied feebly. Narcissa marched across the room, grabbed his arm and pulled him out of my bed with surprisingly strength.
“YOU PUT SOME CLOTHES ON YOUNG MAN AND THEN YOU ARE COMING STRAIGHT BACK HOME, I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU WOULD EVER DARE―”
“Mum! You can’t just take me away, I’m seventeen, I’m of age, you can’t―”
“I AM YOUR MOTHER AND I CAN DO WHATEVER I’D LIKE!” Narcissa screamed. “WE ARE GOING HOME AND YOU ARE NOT PERMITTED TO SEE MELODY EVER AGA―”
“MUM! HELL NO!” Draco shouted back. “I’m in love with her, you can’t separate us!”
“YES, I CAN!” Narcissa screeched.
“No, you can’t! Try for some logic!”
“Draco, you ran away! You didn’t return when I told you to, and then when I finally manage to find you, I find you having―”
“Mum, we weren’t doing anything! And besides, I obviously love Melody, I have ever since I met her! I won’t let you take me away from her. Either we’re both coming or neither of us are.” Draco wrenched his arm out of Narcissa’s grasp and came to sit beside me. He wrapped his arms around my waist tightly, giving his mother a sort of cold glare that dared her to challenge him.
“Draco, you are coming back to Malfoy Manor for the Easter holidays alone. Afterwards you may return to Hogwarts, but you may NOT return here to sleep with this tramp―”
“EXCUSE ME!” I burst out angrily. “I am not a tramp!”
“It doesn’t matter what you are, I will not have my son―”
“Stop it!” Draco shouted. “Mum, I can’t believe you would insult Melody like that! She’s most certainly not. Don’t you get it, Mum? How many times do I have to tell you? Melody and I are in love. You can’t change that. Nobody can. So I suggest you get used to it.”
“Draco, you must come home for the Easter holidays, and I don’t want Melody coming with you.” Narcissa remained insistent on this point. “I suppose it’s true that I cannot force you to go back to Hogwarts afterwards, but please just come home for a short while.” Narcissa pleaded.
I gazed at Draco, frowning. “You should go, just for a few days, Draco. I’m sure your family misses you.”
“But I’ll miss you a million times more…” Draco murmured. I kissed him.
“I know, I’ll miss you like hell, too. But you can come straight back, okay?”
“Okay…” said Draco, kissing me. After a minute, Narcissa cleared her throat loudly. Reluctantly, Draco and I broke apart. He got up, picked his clothes up off the floor, and put them back on. He shoved his stuff back into his trunk and pocketed his wand.
“I’ll miss you…” he said, hugging me.
“I’ll miss you too,” I said, gently kissing him. “I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
Narcissa impatiently clicked her tongue.
“Bye, Mel…” Draco frowned.
“Bye…”
He turned and followed Narcissa out the door. As they walked away, I heard Draco burst out angrily at his mother. I sighed as I lay back down on my bed. I already felt lonely.
Another perfect moment shattered.
A Synopsis of The Rest of DYTM Because I'm Never Going To Finish It
- Spoiler:
- Okay, so let's see, where were we. Ah, yes. We leave off at Chapter 14. So, Russell returns to Malfoy Manor in Draco's absence, this time disguised as *gasp* Draco, by use of the Polyjuice Potion. Melody is deceived by this clever ruse, and is more than happy to continue where she and Draco left off before he was dragged away by his mother. (That's the awkward/explicit part which I was intending to skip over in Chapter 15, although I never wrote more than three paragraphs of the chapter.) So later that night, Melody is about to fall asleep, when Russell's potion wears off and he looks like himself again. She's more horrified at what just happened than furious at Russell for tricking her, and after Stupefying Russell, she Apparates to Malfoy Manor, sobbing uncontrollably, and finds that Draco has just left to return to her. By the time she gets back to the manor, Draco has discovered Russell in Melody's bed (He thinks he's asleep rather than Stupefied.) Thinking she was cheating on him, he ignores her pleads and sobs and returns to Hogwarts, heartbroken. Melody uses the Cruciatus Curse on Russell in her anger, and then sinks down against the wall, sobbing. Russell wakes to find himself back to his true form and Melody sobbing in the corner. Figuring out what happened, he tries to comfort her, but she wants nothing to do with him and locks him outside. He knows better than to unlock the door and come back in, and so returns to Hogwarts and faces Draco's wrath. The next day, Melody is about to return to the school when she gets the call from Voldemort to assemble for the Battle of Hogwarts. She does so, and as the Death Eaters invade the school, Melody finds herself in the midst of the most dangerous part of the battle. Russell finds her and apologizes sincerely for the horrible things he's done to her. He tells her he truly loves her, and he should have let her be with Draco since that was what made her happy, and what was most important to him was Melody's happiness. Before Melody can respond, a Killing Curse shoots at her. Russell dives in front of her and takes the curse himself, falling to the floor, dead. Tears blurring her vision, Melody runs off to find Draco and assure that he's still alive. She finds him covered in ashes, running away from the thoroughly burnt-looking Room of Requirement. Before he can say a word, she throws her arms around him and kisses him, and then pulls him behind a tapestry and explains everything, sobbing. When she finishes, Draco simply holds her for a long time. He tells her he loves her more than life itself, and it had been agony without her. As they hurry away from the epicenter of the battle, Draco yells above the din, "When this is all over, marry me?" Melody replies, "Of course. But how do you know we're going to make it out alive?" Draco kisses her and whispers, "Don't you trust me?"
