And at a start of a sentence

Post by summer on Mon 31 Jan 2011, 3:07 pm

Well today when my teacher was marking my work she said that you
can't put ''and'' at the start of a sentence.
Oh yes i can because i've been doing that for ages now and she's
never said anything about it before no teacher has ever said that
to me before well maybe a few but yes you can put ''and'' at the
start of a sentence.

It isn't grammatically correct. Teachers don't EVER start telling you that until you in upper elementary to middle school. If you start a sentence with "And" in word, it'll GreenLine/Grammar Check the sentence and tell you it's incomplete. To start a sentence with "And" is considered slang. It's like throwing the word "Like" all over a sentence where it doesn't need to be. Ex: -Like, when you're like, talking like, I don't know, like, you know what I mean?- The only exception is poetry because it has its own rules of grammar.

The only time you're supposed to use 'and' at the start of a sentence is when you need to put emphasis on a point so strong that the point itself needs it's own sentence, and even so, it's not necessarily correct. Technically, you're not supposed to at all. I occasionally throw one in there though...

Same here. Well, I wouldn't have given you an answer based on grammar, I would of stuck with: You can't use and at the beginning of a sentence, because your teacher says so. But your responce was much better...
