That's Why

Chapter 1

That beautiful girl sat next to me- not that I could help it. These were assigned seats. No one could help where they sat. Sophie's sad brown eyes stayed fixed on nothing. I walked over to my seat, trying not to be eager.
"Brian," I heard Mitch call my name.
I turned to look at him. His hazel eyes sparkled with mischief, and I glared at him. Don't you dare tell anyone! I mouthed. He nodded, still looking amused.
". . . Mitch next to Robby . . ." I heard the teacher call.
I couldn't help shakng in silent laughter. Robby the nerd who always had either allergies, or a bad cold. I looked over and saw Mitch grimace, before stumbling off toward his chair. I relized that I was standing in the middle of the room smiling to myself. I looked like an idiot. I blushed, and scrambled to my seat. When Sophie saw i was next to her, her back became rigid. I'll wear calone tomorrow, I decided. When everyone had their seats, we had five minutes to talk.
"What's wrong with you?" I blurted out.
Sophie looked at me. "Who, me?" she asked quietly.
I nodded. "Yeah, you never talk, and your eyes are always sad.."
"My best friend hates me," she murmered.
I couldn't help but pity her. She looked depressed. How could anyone do this to such a pretty girl? She looked practiclly destroyed, what with looking all sad and lonely.
"I'm sorry," I mumbled.
For a moment, her eyes blazed with anger. "We used to be so close,"
"What happened?" I asked.
She took a deep breath. "I used to have another best friend- Kelsey. Kelsey . . . she was beautiful. But, she was a very rude, and horrible person deep down. She got to know you, than when the time was right, she controlled you. You couldn't help but copy her, and follow her around like a little puppy-dog. When we were in the same class, I made a new friend- Shaye. She was awesome, sweet and always caring. But then- recently- Shaye met Kelsey, and Kelsey started controling her. Kelsey may have moved, they see eachother on weekends. Kelsey told Shaye to hate me, when Shaye still liked me. And now . . . I have no friends, and I have no way of getting them back,"
Wow. This girl had been through a lot. I had a sudden urge to comfort her, and to put my hand on her shoulder, and soothe her. But I didn't of course.
"That's way." She said.
"I'm sorry," I said. "I had no idea-"
"Don't worry. I'll be fine, I guess. I mean, who really even needs friends anyway? I've got my mum, dad, cats . . ."
"Everyone needs friends,"
she looked at me. "We do?"
"Yeah. You need friends to interact with, and to just . . . be friends with."
She sighed. "I guess so. But I haven't got anyone. I want Shaye back," she choked on the last word, and her eyes clouded with grief.
"Don't worry," I said.
She looked at me. "I've got all the reason in the world to worry!" she wailed.
"I'll be your friend." I said.

Chapter 2

"Really?" she asked, her eyes shining.
"Yeah. I can't see why anyone'd be mean to you!"
She blinked. "What do you mean?
"Well, you're beautiful, and-" I broke off, swallowing.
She blushed, and looked down. "Will you help me?" she whispered.
"Help you what?" I asked, confused.
"Get my friends back, of course."
"Err . . . how, eactly?"
"Well, I'm not too sure myself . . ."
"Then why-"
"I know, I know. Then why expect you to know."
"Well, yeah. I mean-"
I looked up at her, and saw her eyes blaze like a brown fire of anger. "There's Kelsey." she snarled.
I swung my head around, to look at Kelsey. Every boy seemed to be mooning over her, (Mitch included) looking at her with glazed eyes. I could see why. She had brown hair with blonde high-lights, that fell in ringlets, and her finger nails were colored bright pink. She wore skinny jeans and ballet flats. She wore a dark pink blouse, and her lips were shiny with gloss. She was beautiful. Perhaps even more that Sophie.
"Ah, Miss Adams. You'll be next to Sophie." Ms. Rogers said.
Sophie's hand shot up in the air.
"Yes, Miss Vermuty?"
"Umm, we can't be next to eachother,"
"Nonsesne!"
"No, we don't get along!"
"Well, you'd bette start. These are our permanent seats!"
Sophie whimpered, and scooted her seat as far away possible from Kelsey.
"Shaye says you treated her baadly." Kelsey hissed.
"Liar!" Sophie flashed back.
"Ms. Rogers! Sophie called me a liar!" Kesley whined.
"Is this ture, Miss Vermuty?"
"Yes, but-"
"Detention!"
"What?! But she did lie!"
"It's true, Ms. Rogers! I heard it," I heard my voice say.
Ms. Rogers raised her eyebrow. "And what part of this do you play, Mr. Henry?"
"Nothing-"
"Then stay quiet. If this isn't about you, than I suggest you stay out of it!"
"But-"
"No 'ifs', 'ands' or 'buts'!" Ms. Rogers snapped.
