Nadine giggled at his fail compliment, although it did mean so much to her. "Thank you." She couldn't help but kiss him again.

James sighed. It seemed, that in the short span of about 5 days, so much had changed. Nothing was the same, anymore.

Nadine couldn't believe that just a week ago, she barely gave a passing thought to this incredible boy. The past week had been filled with changes, for better and for worse, and everything was different, now. Yet Nadine couldn't imagine life before him.

James thought back. The first time he had seen Nadine was in Science class last week. People had been calling him James the Lame. And, he mentally laughed, Nadine the Lean. That hadn't been that long ago, but it seemed like everything before then was just sort of fuzzy. Nothing was ever going to be the same.

Nadine intertwined her fingers with his, leaning against his chest. She wished this moment could last forever. But of course--
"Oh!" Mrs. Tuzet had walked into the kitchen. "I'm sorry, did I ruin your moment? Did you two eat breakfast? How are you feeling, Nadine?"

((Whoo! Go Ms. Tuzet! xD))

James nodded, "We had breakfast. Well, actually, it's like, two in the afternoon, so this is really more lunch, but, yes, we ate. Wow. That was a run on sentence, sorry."

[Dreamer]

Nadine exhaled loudly through her nose with a smirk. ((You know, that sort of chuckle/snort that you do when you exhale through your nose loudly with a smirk? Err, I fail at explaining it, but hopefully you understand. )) "I'm feeling fine, Mrs. Tuzet. Thank you again."

((I know what you mean. ))

"Well, okay darling! I'll leave you two to it!" and she bustled off, looking rushed.

(( xD Okay, good. I was like "snort" *backspace* "chuckle" *backspace* err.. "exhale loudly through nose with a smirk." ...will Lauren understand that? ))

Nadine turned to James with a ghost of a smile. "Your mom is really nice. At least she cares about you, unlike mine."

"Yeah, she's alright. And I'm sorry, again." James grimaced a little.

(( *Pumps fist victoriously, happy to be funny for once* ))

"It's not your fault, it's hers," Nadine shrugged. "And I've long since gotten used to it."

((You know, sorta when you laugh through your nose... xD))

"But it's terrible," James pushed, "But my home is your home. You can come here whenever."

(( That would've been a better way to describe it. xD ))

"Thanks," said Nadine, kissing him on the cheek. "So, what to do now?"

"I don't know. We've got a day to ourselves."

[Dreamer]

"Can we go check out the lake? I want to see the damage..."

[Tolly12bells]

"Yeah," James sighed, lifting himself out of his chair, "I'm a little afraid to see the place..."

[Dreamer]

"Me, too. It's so sad that things like this happen to nature..."

[Tolly12bells]

"But, you know, maybe there were some lodgepole pines with their ceratnus cones that explode at 118º Farenheit (sp?), and then there are going to be some new trees. It'll recover... eventually." James started walking towards the front door. It seemed weird that it was only a couple days ago when he'd been doing the same thing, on the way to school in the morning.

Nadine nodded, impressed at how much James knew. She took his hand as they walked out of the house and down the street.

When they arrived at the lake, their eyes met the worst. The charred black remnants of many trees, and ash dusted ground. The green grasses were no longer green, but had shriveled into little black stubs.
James sighed through his nose.

[Dreamer]

Without saying a word, Nadine walked to the center of the burnt beach and sat down on the charred ground. The only place she had to escape was now gone... her inspirational writing spot, gone... her meditative thinking spot, gone... her pure place of beauty and wonder, her fairy-tale land, her perfect place... and now all that was left were blankened chunks of wood, fried grass, and ash-filled waves.

James sat down next to her, "It'll be back eventually, and this time, we can help it along. We can plant new trees, and make this right again."

[Dreamer]

Nadine nodded. "It's just... really tragic..."
