"Uh-huh," Blaze replied, following the boys and dragging Fawn along. "Xander's a ton of fun to hang out with. We used to go on adventures and expeditions all the time... hey, Alex!" she yelled.
"Yeah?" he asked from about twenty feet away.
"Let's go exploring, like the old days!"
"You want to lead?"
"No, you. You're our captain."
"Nice, let's go." Alexander started towards the portal and the rest of the group ran after him.

"Nice! I love exploring!" Fawn exclaimed. She felt comforted, for some reason she didn't understand. But, hey, that was okay with her.

They appeared in the forest, which was still bloodstained from previous battles.
"The war's still going on, so everyone be on your guard," Alexander warned. He, too, had come home from the war wounded on the first day, but had healed. After checking to make sure everyone was behind him, he led the group off to the right, to where he knew a cave was but had never explored it. The group moved in a pack, Alexander at the head, Blaze and Jake wandering along at the rear.

Fawn was excited- the war was still going on. Now this was fun. Even though it was dangerous, it was fun.

They soon came to the bottom of a cliff. There was a crevice in the rock face not too high up. Alexander began to climb, squeezing inside the narrow crack when he reached it. "Wow," he murmured, and his voice echoed. Though the entrance was small, the cavern was huge. There were several natural tunnels snaking into the darkness.

"A huge cavern! Come see, it's awesome--" He burst back out of the cave mouth and accidently conked his head against Fawn's.
"Oh, I'm sorry," he said, blinking to clear his vision. "Are you okay?" He held out his hand and helped her up into the cave.

Fawn shook her head, in effort to clear her vision. "Yeah, fine," she said, a bit cheerfully.
Once into the cave, she gasped with excitement. "Whoa, amazing!" she shouted.

The rest soon followed them in, all gasping with awe when they saw the cavern.
"Let's split up and explore," Alexander suggested.
"You sound like that old mystery-solving cartoon. You know, with the dog, what was his name, something doo. 'Let's split up and look for clues,' the blonde guy would always say," noted Blaze.
"Er, okay then," said Alexander after a moment. What in the world was a cartoon? "Well, anyway. Fawn, you come with me, then Blaze and Jake obviously, and Stain is ridin' solo."
Stain glared at him, while Blaze and Jake laughed. "Ooh," said Blaze, "In the cartoon, the leader blonde guy would always pick the orange-haired girl to go with him, and he liiiiiked her. Do you like Fawn, Xan?" she teased.
"Blaze, nobody knows what the hell you're talking about. What's a cartoon, anyway?" Alexander asked, throwing off the question.
"Nevermind," Blaze sighed.

"See?" Blaze pumped her fist in the air mischeviously. "I win!"
"Yeah, yeah. Get on to that dark tunnel with your boyfriend," Alexander grinned mischievously.
"Oh, shut up and turn off that dirty little mind of yours," Blake teased, flicking Alexander's head and then pulling Jake off down one of the tunnels. Stain was already disappearing into the darkness of another one.
"C'mon," Alexander said, beckoning Fawn to follow him into the third tunnel.

It was soon so dark that Alexander could hardly see Fawn's outline, let alone what was ahead of them. He conjured up a ball of fire, which floated an inch or so above his palm. It illuminated the rough rock walls and the two of them, bathing everything in a redish glow.

Suddenly, the air became very cold and the fire in Alexander's hand went out. They were plunged into complete and total darkness. "Damn it, magical barrier. I can't--do--any--magic," Alexander muttered, struggling, waving his hands around. "Fawn? Where are you?" He reached out and grabbed her hand.
